Japan's Pia fest unveils line up

Tokyo -- The Pia Film Festival, Japan's leading launchpad for young directorial talent for 33 years, has announced its line-up. Screening in competition will be 17 pics out of 602 submitted. Four have already been selected for other fests: Kashou Iizuka's "Our Future" and Yoshihiro Nagano's "Recreation" will play in the upcoming Vancouver Film Festival's Dragons and Tigers section; Hitoshi Kitagawa's "Damn Life" and Ryu Morioka's "Tominaga Park" are set for the Busan Film Festival, which starts Oct. 6. Serving on the jury for the competition will be producer Shuji Abe, helmer Shinya Tsukamoto, helmer Takahisa Zeze and thesp Kaho Minami. Also on the sked are two classics by Ernst Lubitsch and Mikio Naruse's 1934 silent "Street Without End" as well as panel events featuring helmers Kazuhiko Hasegawa, Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Shinya Tsukamoto and Shunji Iwai.
