'War Horse' Author Makes Quiet Appearance in Play
NY (AP) Audiences at Wednesday's matinee performance of "War Horse" likely never noticed a very special actor who was making his Lincoln Center stage debut.Best-selling author Michael Morpurgo, who wrote the book the Tony Award-winning play is based on, was part of more than a dozen actors watching the auctioning of the horse Joey at the top of the show. The author, who made a similar crowd scene appearance in the London production of "War Horse" and was an extra in Steven Spielberg's movie version, didn't have any dialogue and didn't appear again until the curtain call a few hours later. The only hint he was there was when the auctioneer called out for "Mr. Morpurgo.""They hide me away," the 68-year-old writer said with a smile during a backstage interview, still wearing his velvety Edwardian-era coat. "For me, it's a wonderful privilege for me to be connected to this whole way that theater works."In some ways, Morpurgo's NY professional acting debut was more meaningful than the others: His father the Canadian actor Anthony van Bridge twice appeared at Lincoln Center in the 1960s.Morpurgo, who has written more than 100 children's books, had come to NY after visiting the Canadian cast of "War Horse" in Toronto, which starts up in February. The chance to step where his father stepped years ago was too irresistible to turn down."I thought, 'I've got to go and be in the same place.' Isn't it silly?" he said. "I love full circles."Van Bridge, a respected actor in Canada who was a fixture at the Shaw and Stratford festivals, left Morpurgo's mother after returning from World War II to find she'd rather be with another man. Morpurgo and his father eventually reunited when he was in his 20s; he now calls him a "sweet, kind man.""War Horse" premiered at the National Theatre in November 2007. After two sold-out runs, it moved to London's West End in March 2009, where it continues to play at the New London Theatre. It opened at Lincoln Center this year and won five Tonys, including best play, and a U.S. tour will open in Los Angeles in June and travel to 19 cities, including Philadelphia, Dallas and Minneapolis.Morpurgo, a former teacher who discovered his love of storytelling in the classroom, likes to visit each cast to talk about the roots of his best-selling 1982 children's book, which tells the story of a horse that has been enlisted to fight for the English in World War I. The show, adapted by Nick Stafford, is visually stunning, thanks to creative work by Handspring Puppet Company. At one point during the interview, Austin Durant, who plays the auctioneer Chapman Carter, comes in to ask Morpurgo to autograph a volume of "War Horse" for his mother, Doris, as a Christmas present."Auctioneer, you were wonderful," Morpurgo told him."It was great!" said Durant, beaming. "Well played."Morpurgo, who was Britain's third children's laureate, laughs about the incredible path his book "War Horse" has taken. When it was first published, it was largely ignored and for years never sold more than a few thousand copies a year, though his wife, Clare, thinks it is his best. Then in 2005, Tom Morris, a director at the National Theatre, was looking for a way to create with Handspring Puppet Company a family friendly work. Morris' mother suggested "War Horse" after reading a second-hand copy. Now it's been translated into 33 languages and has more than 500,000 copies in print."It's the same bloody book," he said, laughing.Copyright 2011 Associated Press. REVIEW: New Year's Eve is the Movie Equivalent of a Plastic-Wrapped American Cheese Slice
Who are these beautiful, sharply dressed, slightly orange people gliding so effortlessly through a glittery, postcard-worthy version of NY in New Year’s Eve? They’re stars, of course, a galaxy of stars of varying luminescence. New Year’s Eve is Garry Marshall’s follow-up to last year’s Valentine’s Day, which he also directed, and like that film it uses its titular holiday as a ruthless star delivery system in which a menagerie of assembled celebs sprints through a collection of interconnected narrative threads that briskly accelerate from alleged comedy to syrupy sentimentality. You’re not going to see anyone in New Year’s Eve get drunk, kiss their married boss, vomit and then barricade themselves in the bathroom to spend the rest of the night crying, no sir. Happy endings abound for everyone here, even the terminally ill and the woman who dares to wear clogs. Clogs! (Fetching ones with shearling trim and four-inch heels, but whatever — burn her!) To note that the storylines in New Year’s Eve are ludicrous and virulently cliched seems beside the point, or simply unimportant. These characters are so nominal that when, say, Lea Michele gets stuck in an elevator with Ashton Kutcher, that’s exactly how you think of the set-up, and when the doors finally open you half expect them to scurry off to the sets of Glee and Two and a Half Men, where they may be contractually fined for their tardiness. But for the sake of capturing the full scope of this motion picture, here’s a bullet point summary of the many goings-on: · The VP of the Times Square Alliance (Hilary Swank) and her faithful police minion (Ludacris) prepare for the Midtown celebration and manage a crisis when the ball gets stuck halfway up, a technical snag that requires the calling in of legendary ambiguously ethnic electrician Kominsky (Hector Elizondo). · An uptight caterer (Katherine Heigl, natch) works an event at which her famous rock-star ex Jensen (Jon Bon Jovi) is playing, while her sous chef (Sofa Vergara, turning her likable Modern Family shtick up to intolerable levels) looks on. · A young pregnant couple (Jessica Biel and Seth Meyers) race another couple (Sarah Paulson and Til Schweiger) to have the first baby of the year and win a $25,000 prize. · A dying man (Robert De Niro) just wants to see the ball drop one last time, but the mean hospital won’t let him. His nurse (Halle Berry) keeps him company. · A dowdy secretary (Michelle Pfeiffer) hires a free-spirited bike messenger (Zac Efron) to help her fulfill a decade’s worth of new year’s resolutions in one day. · An uptight costume designer (Sarah Jessica Parker, natch) doesn’t want her teenager daughter (Abigail Breslin) to go to Times Square. · An exec (Josh Duhamel) hitches a ride with a wacky family in order to get back to his company party in time to make a speech and rendezvous with a mystery lady he met last year. · And, as mentioned, Ashton Kutcher and Lea Michele get stuck in an elevator and fall in lurve. I may have forgotten one or two. Yeardley Smith, John Lithgow, Carla Gugino, James Belushi, Cary Elwes, Cherry Jones, Matthew Broderick and others make appearances as well, and Ryan Seacrest plays himself, since he was presumably there anyway — the film somewhat awkwardly folds in footage from last year’s Times Square celebration, with a Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (also a Warner Bros. release!) billboard prominently grafted in. Less a film than a product, New Year’s Eve is so carefully calculated as to be, in its own way, admirable. It’s innocuous enough to accommodate families, if not little children. It has a wide enough range of talent on offer that both your grandmother and your tween niece should see someone they recognize. It’s inoffensive unless you’re put off by the fact that one of the moms-to-be is willing to schedule an unnecessary C-section in order to compete for prize money (“May the best vajayjay win!” = actual line of dialogue), that both Vietnam and Iraq are unabashedly worked in, or by the film’s overall soullessness. There’s not an intentional laugh to be found, though at the screening I attended there were guffaws at a moment involving a character gasping “Wait! If you’re here, who’s at Times Square?” and the reveal that followed. Next up, I’d imagine, will probably be Christmas, though I wouldn’t put it past Thanksgiving to sneak in there, given it’s been less than a decade since Love Actually and there’s no rush — new, more affordable celebrities are minted every day. In the meanwhile, it’s worth pondering the outtakes that run over the closing credits and that are the phoniest part of this insincere endeavor, striving to present an old-fashioned illusion that the film was a cheery group endeavor in which everyone had a great time together instead of a staggered shoot in which people flew in for an efficient few days on set before heading off to their next gig. This is business, folks, not fun — everyone can take a cup of kindness when the box office grosses roll in. Follow Alison Willmore on Twitter. Follow Movieline on Twitter.

Chewbacca on 'Glee': Past 'Star Wars' Figures Turning up in Something Which Is not 'Star Wars'
Chewbacca will most likely be round the holiday episode of 'Glee.' Sadly, it does not appear that he'll be getting involved in just about any Existence Day occasions (for individuals who've whatrrrs your opinion Existence Day describes, I am sorry), but he'll be turning up in a few type of Christmas dream sequence. "Oh, heavens, Chewbacca turning up on 'Glee' can be a travesty for the sanctity of 'Star Wars,'" you'd have probably mentioned prior to deciding to ever seen 'The Phantom Menace.' Now, you just shrug. I merely shrugged. Han Solo just shrugged. We're all, with one another, shrugging. But! It doesn't happen frequently, but this isn't the first time a 'Star Wars' character, carried out with the original actor, has came out in something which isn't Alien. Behold, (not counting ads) past 'Star Wars' figures turning up in something which is not 'Star Wars.' 'The Muppet Show' Hey, remember 'The Muppets'? Whatever happened on their behalf? Anyway, in 1980, Luke Skywalker, C-3P0 and R2D2 were trying to find Chewbacca (they need to really try searching round the number of 'Glee'). Hey, need to visit some overacting? Move forward to 5:40 to check out Mark Hamill scream "Lower while using Empire!" before kicking lower a door. 'Sesame Street' R2-D2 is deeply deeply in love with a fire place hydrant. That's relating to this. C-3PO does make an effort to talk R2-D2 by using this foolishness. People should give consideration to C-3P0 more often. Anti-Smoking PSA This is not a genuine commercial, so that it counts. Technically it's a pubic service announcement about the benefits of smoking. Look how awesome R2-D2 looks getting a cigarette! If If only to become as awesome as Artoo, I will smoke. OK, getting just re-seen that clip, apparently C-3PO doesn't would love you to smoke. Right, it absolutely was the '70s, who knows. Lesson learned: Don't smoke. Whooping Cough PSA Also, don't get whooping cough. Smoking does not cause whooping cough, no less than in humans. But, the study is not proven on droids. Look, all I realize is always that I merely seen R2-D2 smoking a butt, now he's the whooping cough. You understand, I have got a sense that anybody which has ever emerge against immunizing children has probably seen this add. I really could picture an issue through which hearing C-3PO patronizingly saying, "parents of Earth, please immunize your kids,In . would lead some parent to prevent just that from spite. 1997 MTV Music Honours Mike Myers granted Chewbacca a very long time achievement award within the 1997 MTV Music Honours. Appreciate this, Chewbacca won this award before he even came out on 'Glee.' You'll be able to contact Mike Ryan on Twitter Follow Moviefone on Twitter Like Moviefone on Facebook

Getty Images Tracey Gold, who once struggled with anorexia, admits she gets worried when she sees actresses on hit shows shrinking, but she doesn't place the blame solely on Hollywood.our editor recommends'Celebrity Wife Swap' Couples, Premiere Date SetLifetime, 'Army Wives' Producer Developing Affair Drama (Exclusive)Lifetime Reveals 'Project Runway All Stars' Cast, Premiering in JanuaryLifetime Developing Casey Anthony TV Movie Based on Prosecutor's BookLifetime Sets 'America's Most Wanted' Premiere Date'America's Most Wanted' Gets Second Chance on Lifetime The actress toldThe Hollywood Reporter that the root of the problem is more widespread than just the entertainment industry. "I always look at the first season of a TV show and see an actress one way, and then in the second season you see her 10 pounds lighter -- it's a cycle," Gold said. "I think there's an ongoing problem -- not just Hollywood, but also society. It's a widespread problem across the country." STORY: Lifetime Renews 'Army Wives,' Greenlights Jenny Bicks Drama Pilot Gold, who struggled with the disease in the 1990s, is hoping to make a difference in the lives of women battling life-threatening conditions like anorexia and bulimia in Lifetime's new unscripted series Starving Secrets With Tracey Gold, which premieres at 10 pm. Friday. Each hourlong episode will feature Gold sharing her own experiences with other women and working with a team of specialists to help them get the treatment they need. The actress became anorexic at age 19, after finding fame as Carol Seaver on the hit sitcom Growing Pains, and it nearly took her life by age 22. But she believes she would have struggled with anorexia even if she hadn't been in the public eye. Part of the problem today, she said, is that there's even more pressure on celebrities now as the number of tabloids and media outlets covering celebrities has grown, not to mention all the online bloggers and places where fans can post critical comments for all the world to see, like Twitter. STORY: 'Celebrity Wife Swap' Couples, Premiere Date Set; Tracey Gold Among Participants "It's people behind a computer, without ever having to show their face, who are perpetuating more of a need to fit a certain mold," she said. "We live in the age of the Internet, and people can say whatever they want and be really nasty." That's part of the reason she praises young stars like Demi Lovato and Mary-Kate Olsen for not being afraid to seek treatment knowing that their every move is chronicled in the tabloids. She also applauds Miley Cyrus, who recently stuck up to people critical of Lovato after she appeared to gain some weight in the wake of her treatment. At the same time, Gold tries not to judge when she notices an actress losing weight since she doesn't know what's really going on. "It's a very easy thing that the media likes to do to an actress when she loses weight is to slap on the title of anorexia, but that's a dangerous place to go," Gold said. "I don't know anyone's personal struggle, and to make a quick judgment trivializes the true nature of what anorexia really is." STORY: THR's Reality Power List Gold developed the concept for Starving Secrets because she felt like eating disorders weren't being talked about as much as they should be. After coming up with the idea, she pitched it to GRB Entertainment (A&E's Intervention), who then took it to Lifetime (she also serves as an executive producer on the show). She is hoping to shed light on the issue by addressing stereotypes and changing the "glamorized view" of the disorders. She also hopes the six-episode series spurs other women struggling in similar situations to seek help. "My goal is to shed light on what an eating disorder looks like," Gold said. "We get in there with real women to show that it's not a glamorous thing. It's an isolating, lonely, hard, raw disease. It's not skinny women on a red carpet; it's an all-consuming thing in life where everything is falling down around you." Gold, who played Carol Seaver on Growing Pains for seven years, where her character was the brunt of fat jokes from her brother (played by Kirk Cameron). She later played the title role in the TV movie For the Love of Nancy, which centered on the main character's struggle with a severe eating disorder. As for her Growing Pains castmates, she said she still keeps in touch with them through various reunion events they attend. STORY: Leonardo DiCaprio in 'Growing Pains': A Look Back at the 'J. Edgar' Star's Breakout Role And what about Leonardo DiCaprio, whoplayed a homeless boy taken in by the Seaver family in the final season? "I have a great bondage with Leo," she said. "He's busy, but I know if he saw me, he'd give me a big hug. He saw my husband at a Lakers and came running up to him." She also recalls a young Robin Thicke -- son of her TV dad, Alan Thicke -- hanging out on the set. "He's super talented, and I could not be happier for his success," she said of the singer. But Gold is a success story herself: She is now married with four sons and said she's "recovered" from her eating disorder. Becoming pregnant with her first child helped, as she realized her dietary habits were not just affecting her alone anymore. Now, "I go through my life and I'm not obsessing about food," she said. "It doesn't control my day. But I'm smart enough to know in the back of my mind, I have to be mindful not to skip a meal when I'm stressed. I'm not in treatment anymore and I try to eat healthy." Blanche Barrow - Melissa van der Schyff
Sheriff Schmid - Joe HartBoy meets girl around the deserted road in Depression-era West Dallas, and sooner than you'll be able to say "Warren Beatty," they're moving inside the hay -- quite simply, the dust. Since his title is Clyde and hers is Bonnie, the eventual result's not surprising here, as well as the dead-finish story trajectory evolves difficult, together with the fact unschooled white-colored-trash gunslingers generally aren't loquacious enough to steal the spotlight. For individuals that, three exciting performances together with a much better-than-usual score from Frank Wildhorn mix to produce this an arresting if problematic new musical. If Wildhorn ("Jekyll and Hyde," "Wonderland") has heretofore been seen on Broadway just like a pop-music interloper, "Bonnie and Clyde" should finally lay the concept to relaxation. The music activity virtually fits the material there are many country twang and several extraneous matter, nevertheless the score has plenty to supply. A few the tunes are particularly pleasing, a duet for your Barrow women referred to as "You Prefer Which Team You Love," and Bonnie's large ballad ("Dyin' ain't so bad, not in the event you both matchInch). Shooting within the stage as Clyde is budding star-to-be Jeremy Jordan, who developed a splash in September inside the Paper Mill Playhouse output of "Newsies" he arrives searching similar in results here. Laura Osnes, who won possible-show competition for your lead inside the 2007 revival of "Grease" and recently carried out Hope in Roundabout's "Anything Goes," is especially winning since the poetry-writing Bonnie. (The authors determine that sherrrd like being not just a gunslinger's moll but a celebrity, enabling those to write tunes about Clara Bow -- also to intercut predictions of Bow and Al Capone.) Also giving a standout performance is Melissa van der Schyff, singing and acting commandingly as Clyde's sister-in-law Blanche. Nevertheless, there's something ironic in regards to the way Bonnie and Clyde here opine the planet will remember them, a lot more fact the artists, strong since they're here, are unlikely to erase the memory of Beatty and Faye Dunaway in Arthur Penn's 1967 film classic. The element of sexual disorder because version is absent here (although much includes teenage Clyde getting been brutalized jail time), as they are an identical amount of dramaturgy: The lyrics by Don Black (whose credits include "Born Free" and Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical version of "Sunset Blvd.") are essentially functional and sometimes peppered with cliches. TV scribe Ivan Menchell's book also provides its flaws in the 19 stars inside the cast, only five appear obtain greater than stick figures to see. Helmer Rob Calhoun ("Newsies") does a cutting-edge job while using material, although he seems somewhat hemmed along with decking made up of several skewed platforms. Set by Tobin Ost (furthermore a "Newsies" collaborator) produces interesting pictures but crimps the staging departing no room for choreography. Show does not have under 35 producers and fasten producers in the list above the title, that is most likely no archive but is suggestive of tough fundraising event. Among the budget items: a enormous volume of spurting stage blood stream. Sets and costumes, Tobin Ost lights, Michael Gilliam appear, John Shivers predictions, Aaron Rhyne music supervision/orchestrations/plans, John McDaniel production stage manager, Paul J. Cruz.
